Home Battery FAQs
How long will a Tesla Powerwall power my home?
In an outage, your Powerwall(s) will automatically disconnect from the grid and restore electricity in your home in a matter of milliseconds. The duration of outage protection with Powerwall 3 depends on your starting charge level, energy usage, how many batteries you have.
We estimate that if your battery is charged to 100% and you're just running essentials (lights, Wifi, ceiling fans, fridge, garage door, charging electronics) you'll get about 12 hours of backup per Powerwall. If you're also running a heavy appliance like air conditioning or heating your backup time will decrease to about 4-5 hours per Powerwall.* Watch this video to learn more.

How many home batteries should I get?
For many customers, one home battery is sufficient. However, depending on your personal usage, backup desires, and current utility bill, your Sunrun consultant may recommend more than one battery. Give us a call to get in touch with a Sunrun consultant today.
Where will my home battery be placed?
A certified Sunrun installer will mount your home battery on the wall, usually next to your electrical panel inside your garage or on the outside of your home.
How does the Sunrun GridReady program work?
GridReady is a Distributed Power Plant (DPP) program available exclusively to Sunrun customers on the NRG Reliant electricity plan. The purpose of this program is simple: when electricity demand is extremely high and the grid needs help, your home battery automatically shares power.
This support helps keep electricity stable for the entire community and prevents the utility from having to fire up emergency power plants. For providing this critical support, Sunrun provides participating homeowners with a reliable monthly bill credit. This means your battery works for you on a regular basis, earning you extra benefits beyond just blackout protection.

What are the key features of the Tesla Powerwall 3?
Whole-home backup: Many homeowners with a single Powerwall 3 are able to have whole-home backup.
This means the one Powerwall 3 unit is connected to all your home's circuits. However, the question isn't whether your battery can power your whole home, but for how long. Note that similar to a cellphone or laptop, battery life declines more quickly when using more energy all at once. So, if you’re anticipating a longer outage, being mindful of your usage and limiting backup to only necessary loads is wise.
Battery life: The Powerwall 3 offers robust storage capacity of 13.5 kWh* for extended battery life, allowing you to keep your critical appliances running in an outage.
App experience: The Tesla app has a user-friendly interface available to Sunrun customers with one or more Powerwalls that lets you access additional energy insights related to your home energy production, consumption, and storage.
“Blinkless” backup: Powerwall features "blinkless" outage transition, which provides seamless power supply transfer during outages, eliminating any flicker or interruption in electricity. That means no need to reset your clocks and router.
Stacking: Finally, you can stack multiple Powerwalls in your new Sunrun installation to increase flexibility and protection in an outage, particularly in extended outages.
