Solar Battery Storage Savings with PG&E TOU Rates

With a solar battery from a company like Sunrun, you can store solar energy for later use, like in the event of a power outage, while also boosting the performance of your home solar system.1

If you have stored solar energy during summer afternoons when people are blasting their air conditioners to keep their homes comfortable, you’ll be able to offset your electric bill and enjoy more peace of mind.Plus, with a home solar battery and PG&E’s Time-of-Use rates your solar savings can grow further.

Before we dive into how a solar battery like Brightbox saves you money with PG&E’s TOU rates, let’s discuss what TOU rates are and the type of plans PG&E offers.

What Are TOU (Time-of-Use) Rates?

Time-of-Use rates are electricity prices set by electric companies, like PG&E, that change depending on the time, day and season you consume energy from the electric grid.2

In peak demand hours, like in the evening when most people are home using their devices and appliances, PG&E and other electric companies with TOU rate structures charge more for electricity than during off-peak times when people are usually at work or school.3

TOU rates are becoming more common across the nation, with California leading the way. According to California’s Net Energy Metering (NEM 2.0) policy, any homeowner who installs solar panels in the state will need to enroll in TOU rates instead of a traditional per-kilowatt-hour rate.4

How Can I Benefit From PG&E’s TOU Electricity Rates?

PG&E’s TOU rates let you see how electricity prices change during the day. So shifting your energy use at times when electric costs are lower, and grid demand is down, could translate into considerable electric bill savings.

Now, this does not mean you have to completely shut down your electricity use during peak demand hours in the late afternoon and evening. Making small changes, like doing your laundry or running the dishwasher in the morning, can have a positive impact on your energy usage costs.5

Which PG&E TOU Rate Plan Works Best for Solar Panels & Battery Storage?

At Sunrun, we analyzed all of PG&E’s TOU rate structures and believe the E-TOU-A rate (peak pricing from 3 p.m. - 8 p.m. on weekdays) offers the most savings for home customers. That’s why PG&E customers with solar panels and a Brightbox battery are automatically enrolled in the E-TOU-A rate plan when applying for solar.

If PG&E’s rate structures or schedules change in the future, at Sunrun, we’ll re-evaluate and again choose the rate plan we believe generates the most savings for our customers.

PG&E’s E-TOU-A rate plan also has a Baseline Allowance, which is a base amount of energy available at a lower price depending on where you live.8

As an incentive to keep your energy use within the Baseline Allowance, you’ll receive a discount for every kilowatt-hour you consume until you reach your monthly limit. This discount appears on your PG&E bill as a baseline credit and opens you the door to more significant savings.

What Is Smart Battery TOU Allocation?

With a TOU rate plan, PG&E charges you a higher or lower price depending on the time you use electricity from the grid. Yet, when you have a home solar system with a battery, such as Brightbox, your battery will perform Smart TOU Allocation during summer peak hours to use your stored energy instead of consuming electricity from the grid, which helps you offset your electric costs and save more money with each billing period.

Note for PG&E customers: Brightbox will perform Smart TOU Allocation in the summer season (from June 1 to September 30) during weekday peak hours only.

Why Doesn’t Brightbox Perform Year-Round Smart TOU Allocation?

Similar to devices such as your phone, cordless vacuum, or rechargeable Wi-Fi camera, the more you use your home battery, the faster it wears out. That’s why Brightbox only performs Smart TOU Allocation during the summer when your home energy savings are greater than the cost of your battery’s degradation.
