Texas Grid Charging

Free nights grid charging

In Texas, many electric companies offer plans that include free nights and/or weekends. Some new Sunrun solar and Powerwall customers can save on electric utility bills by setting up grid charging on a Free Nights plan. Particularly if you are a high nighttime energy user (9pm-7am), read on to learn more about nighttime Grid Charging on your new Powerwall(s). Please note that whether this is a smart choice for you depends on your electricity usage profile, as detailed below.

Is this right for me?

Typical electricity user: neutral fit

High nighttime electricity user: strong fit

High daytime electricity user: not a fit

If you are able to move more electricity usage to the night, you may unlock savings on your electric utility bills. However, you could end up spending more on your electric utility bills if your daytime usage rises.

This applies if you use an above average amount of energy during the off-peak hours of 9pm-12pm and have the ability to move as much of your usage to the night (9pm-7am) as possible. For example, you can program custom settings on devices like smart thermostats and EV chargers that can modify when you’re using power. Examples of high nighttime electricity users are customers who are not home during the day or run large loads like heating and cooling, cooking appliances, EV chargers, and more in the nights or early mornings. These customers will most likely unlock savings on their electric utility bill versus getting solar & Powerwall storage without Free Nights Grid Charging.

This applies if you use an above average amount of energy during the hours of 12pm-9pm and cannot move loads outside of this period. Examples of high daytime electricity users are young families with children at home throughout the day and professionals who work from home. These customers will almost certainly be spending more by Grid Charging with Free Nights.

I’ve decided that Free Nights Grid Charging is right for me. How do I set it up?

There are three parts to setting up a new (September 1, 2023 and beyond) Sunrun and Powerwall system to charge from a Free Nights plan.

  1. First, you will need your Sunrun installer to configure your system settings.

  2. Next, you will need to ensure you’re on an eligible Free Nights retail electric plan.

  3. Finally, you’ll need to set up your Tesla app to enable grid charging. We’ve created a video guide below if you’d like to do that last part yourself. If you have any questions, please contact your Sunrun representative.
