Utah new city hero

Utah Solar Incentives, Tax Credits, & Rebates

With 300,000 homes powered by the sun and ranking in the top ten solar states, Utah is way ahead in the game when it comes to solar.1 So how does it do it? That’s likely in part due to generous Utah solar energy incentives like the state’s Renewable Energy System Tax Credit and net metering. Top that off with serious savings on your electricity bill, and owning a solar system in Utah is sure to be one of the smartest investments you can make for your home.

Utah Solar Incentives, Rebates, & Tax Credits

Solar Savings Types Value of Savings
Renewable Energy Systems Tax Credit 25% of system cost (caps at $1,600)2
Federal Solar Tax Credit (ITC) 30% of the total system cost4

**Customer’s ability to monetize rebates, incentives and tax credits depends on several factors, including, without limitation, continued state subsidization of these policies, the applicable Sunrun product type, and whether a customer purchases or leases a solar system from Sunrun.

Renewable Energy Systems Tax Credit

Utah wants more households harnessing the power of the sun. Thanks to the Renewable Energy Systems Tax Credit,2 Utah is helping its residents turn solar power into a reality. For systems installed before 12/31/18, solar system owners can earn tax credits amounting to 25% of the system cost, capping at $1,600. Starting in 2019, the cap will drop by $400 every year until the tax credit expires on 12/31/2021.

While Utah solar panel rebates aren’t offered at this time, the tax credit is a welcome addition to solar savings. Go solar now before they expire!

Federal Solar Tax Credit (ITC)

On top of Utah’s state tax credits and net metering, solar system owners are also eligible for the Federal Investment Tax Credit, or ITC,4 if you buy your own solar system outright. The tax credit amounts to 30% of the cost of purchasing your solar system. However, ITC credits will begin stepping down from 30% at the end of 2019.

The tax credit for systems in service after 12/31/19 will drop to 26%. After 12/31/20, it’ll drop even further to 22%, and by 2022 the residential credit will drop to zero.5 That’s why the time to go solar is now. But not to worry—we can help you maximize all the solar savings available to you.
