Frequently Asked Questions

With a solar power purchase agreement or PPA, you pay for the power, not for the panels. The amount you pay is based on a per kilowatt-hour (kWh) rate for the electricity produced by the solar panels on your roof, and it's usually lower than what your local utility charges for residential electricity.

With our solar prepaid lease, you can go solar with just a one-time, up-front payment. When you choose our prepaid lease plan, we’ll also actively monitor and maintain your solar panels over the life of your agreement, so all you have to do is enjoy worry-free solar energy.

Figuring out if your home is good for solar relies on several factors, like where your house is located, the angle of your roof, roof shading, and how old your home is. In order to understand if your home if a good candidate for solar, get in touch with one of our Solar Advisors. They’ll run a personalized analysis of your home with BrightPath™, our proprietary solar design technology. We’ll only recommend solar if it’s the right fit for your home energy needs.

Every household will need a different number of panels based on how much energy it uses, the climate in the area, and how much direct sunlight hits its roof. To learn more about these factors, click here.

During your free consultation, we’ll figure out how much energy a system will need to produce in order to power your home.

Our prepaid lease offers the best value on solar. This plan lets you pay for your solar lease in full, simplifying your solar savings. Unlike our monthly lease, when you prepay for your solar energy, you won’t have to pay monthly bills from Sunrun.

When you sign up for a free quote, our in-house Solar Advisors will work with you to figure out how much you can expect to save. This relies on factors like your utility's solar guidelines, how much electricity you use, and how much sunlight your home gets. We’ll only recommend solar if it’s the right fit for your home energy needs.

All of our solar and storage products are backed by robust manufacturer warranties. When you choose our prepaid lease plan, your solar system will also include 24/7 monitoring and maintenance. So if your system breaks, we’ll fix it—free of charge. Learn more about our Comprehensive Home Solar System Support here.

Once you’re approved for a solar installation, your home will undergo a site assessment so our Solar Design Experts can work on your personalized home solar system design.

After that, our Solar Design Experts will make any necessary adjustments to your design and get your final approval. Once it’s approved, we’ll submit your design to the city for permitting, which can take up to eight weeks. From there, either Sunrun or one of our local certified partners will  perform your solar installation. We only partner with the top-rated solar installers, so rest assured that you’ll have the highest quality solar installation available.

When your installation is finished, the city or county will perform a final inspection of your system. Once it’s approved, it’ll be connected to the grid, and we’ll submit your documents to your utility company. After your utility company grants Permission to Operate (PTO), you’ll be ready to power your home with the sun.

Solar panels can last anywhere between 25 to 30 years, sometimes more. But this doesn’t mean the panels on your roof will stop producing electricity after a couple of decades. It just means their energy production will decrease by what solar panel manufacturers consider optimal to meet the average American family’s energy needs.

With the proper care and maintenance, you can expect to receive significant solar production over the next 20 to 30 years. Our prepaid lease plan includes a comprehensive service guarantee that’ll keep your system in top shape for the duration of your solar agreement.

Brightbox, our holistic home solar battery storage service, can help you power through outages and bill spikes, day and night. It could also help you save money compared to gas- or diesel-powered generators. No fumes, no noise, and no-hassle—Brightbox is fueled every time the sun is out.

Due to tech compatibility, Brightbox is only available with the installation of a new Sunrun home solar system. Check if our Brightbox battery storage solutions are offered in your area.

See the states where Sunrun is currently available and which solar incentives might be offered in your area. Some of the most common incentives include state tax credits, property and sales tax exemptions, Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs), and rebates from your local utility. No matter which state you live in, you can also be eligible for the federal solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) if you purchase your own solar system.

When you choose our prepaid lease plan, you’ll enjoy free, daily monitoring and maintenance from our experienced Monitoring Team. They oversee all Sunrun systems, so if something happens or its performance dips, they’ll reach out to you ASAP to get it fixed. Learn more about our industry-leading Sunrun Guarantee
